Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with Gabriel Torres Huerta, an Account Manager at KHOU

Today, we’re celebrating Gabriel Torres Huerta, an Account Manager at KHOU-TV in Houston. 

Talk about your career path, how you got to where you are today at TEGNA.   

I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, where Novela/Televisa is part of our culture and part of the reason I developed an early interest in television. After studying theater in Mexico, at 20 years old, I moved to the United States. Like many with a television career, I started in an advertising agency. Working in Tracy Locke’s media-buying division introduced me to television stations and their sales departments. Over the next 17 years, I worked as a sales assistant, national sales assistant, account manager, and AE in the Miami, Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston markets.   

Now: What is your current role at TEGNA? 

My current role at TEGNA is as an Account Manager for KHOU-TV Houston. This is still a fairly new job for me, as I moved to Houston in the middle of the pandemic. But it hasn’t taken long to know that it looks to be one of my best work experiences. The caliber of both A.E.s and managers at KHOU makes facilitating their jobs both challenging and rewarding. 

My Halo Moment: What was the most rewarding project you’ve worked on at TEGNA?   

Working at TEGNA is filled with rewarding experiences because of TEGNA’s dedication to community involvement. “Halo Moments” for me certainly include all those projects benefiting children. Giving Birthday Parties to children in homeless shelters; Providing school supplies to needy schools; Food drives. All made for rewarding work experiences at TEGNA. 

Good Company: What does being in good company mean to you?   

Being in “Good Company” means being an integral partner in a team effort. For me working at TEGNA has always been about contributing to our goals and our clients’ goals. It also means learning from and being inspired by co-worker excellence. Quite simply, working at TEGNA IS being in “Good Company.”   

Note to Self: What advice would you give yourself looking back on earlier days in your career?   

You are capable of achieving a lot more than you realize! Set your goals high, and don’t just rely on past methods to achieve them.    

What advice would you give to someone looking to work in media/sales/marketing?    

Do some “pre-work” to increase your knowledge of the industry and separate yourself from the competition.  Buy a book about the business and read it. Read the trades. Introduce yourself to someone in the industry and take them to lunch. Write a sales pitch selling yourself as the product.           

Why is Hispanic Heritage Month important to you?   

I came to the United States FOR opportunities and WITH expectations. It’s with pride and joy that I can say the U.S. has given me many opportunities and has exceeded my expectations. At the same time, with pride and joy, I can say that my Mexican heritage is integral to who I am. TEGNA has provided an inclusive and diverse environment where I feel I belong. Hispanic Heritage Month allows an appreciation of traditions and culture, and I’m proud that TEGNA is part of this celebration.
